i started my internship on monday! i’m doing frontend web dev for a mit music-tech startup.
so far, every work day has started with a short stand up meeting on zoom (since it’s a virtual internship), and then short dev sync meeting. during these meetings, everyone shares what they did the previous day, what they are planning to do, and whether they are “blocked” and need help with any issues. after the meetings, i work independently for the rest of the day.
i like this structure because it gives me the freedom to choose how to use my time. for example, i’ve walked to campus to work and gone on a short jog for a break.
my company’s frontend tech stack uses tailwind, typescript, react, and redux. typescript has been fairly straightforward to pickup, and i think being able to define types is honestly much more satisfying than vanilla javascript. redux is a bit more complicated, especially since we’re using rtk query; learning the syntax has been somewhat difficult.
i’m currently working on building a settings page for the web app. i used figma to make a mockup of the design, which was very satisfying.
here’s what i’ve done outside of work:
- i went to revere beach! it was super nice. unfortunately i thought i wouldn’t want to swim, so i didn’t bring a swimsuit. while i was there i found an international grocery store called fair price market that had very tasty pastries. i definitely want to go back on future weekends!
- my partner and i baked a tea cake! we followed this new york times recipe, except we didn’t have chamomile tea. instead, we used paris, my ultimate favorite tea blend. it was super tasty!
- today i djed at the misti international festival! it was pretty low-key; i just played some opening music while people walked around and got food at the various booths. since it was an international festival, i chose korean, french, and chinese rap songs. it was fun! so far the only dj “gigs” i’ve done have been through mit open spaces events. i want to branch out more, but i don’t really know how to. maybe i’ll try streaming?
- i moved in to my summer residence! i’m still setting up my things, but my room is very interesting (all the beds are hanging from the ceiling, for example) and i will share some photos when it’s ready!
