boston calling and other thoughts on music

this past weekend i went to boston calling, an annual music festival hosted in Boston. i saw:

(friday)

  • part of HAIM
  • part of RÜFÜS DU SOL
  • Avril Lavigne
  • part of Nine Inch Nails

(saturday) – none – we were going to see the strokes but they canceled at the night before due to covid. then it was raining and boston calling paused the festival for several hours, so i ended up not going.

(sunday)

  • Djo
  • Japanese Breakfast
  • Glass Animals
  • part of Weezer

boston calling also had lots of food vendors. i tried some vegan ice cream from fomu, roxy’s grilled cheese, and a shiitake mushroom bowl from riceburg.

i’m not sure if i would go to the festival in future years since tickets are kind of pricey, and i don’t listen to too much rock music. however, overall it was a really fun experience!

going to concerts always inspires me to make more music. i think it would be super cool to grow a following and perform live on stage someday.

i’ve been thinking a lot about what i should be focusing on as a musician. i think i’ve learned to produce certain genres of music fairly well (future bass, happy hardcore), but there are also other genres that i want to make but am not good at making (house; high-tempo, glitch-y stuff).

currently my main goal is to grow my audience. while i want to experiment with other genres, i believe that it might be most effective to focus on what i’m familiar with and push my skills in that genre as far they can go. this has a few benefits:

  • it’s easier to release songs more frequently
  • being consistent helps retain listeners
  • i improve more quickly at producing in one style than learning a new genre from scratch; and then it’s easier to experiment later on when i have more experience
  • it’s more fun to make music that sounds good

this idea seems to line up with the early discographies of indie artists i follow: a lot of their early releases are very similar in style. they then branch out and experiment more once they gained a more established following.

in addition to my solo project, i think it would super cool to play in a band. unfortunately, i don’t know how to play any of the traditional band instruments (drums, keys, guitar, bass) and i don’t know anyone to play with. this a problem for the future though.

outside of music, i’ve been feeling a lot less productive this past week, mainly due to screen addiction. my sleep schedule shifted to very unhealthy hours (thankfully it’s better now), and i spent way too much time on my phone. so, i finally blocked some distracting websites on my phone again, and i might start using cold turkey blocker on my computer.

i also had this bot in a personal discord server that would send a message whenever a new r/FrugalFemaleFashion (a subreddit where people post discounts/sales) post dropped. i have now kicked this bot in an effort to stop sale shopping. i’m starting to think that sale shopping is not a good use of my money, because it’s harder to make good decisions, the sales are usually fast fashion, and dealing with returns is annoying.

ok sorry this blog was kind of all over the place, but i guess to conclude: i’m going to start using my notion to-do list more often to stay organized with my tasks, and i’m going to read physical books to replace scrolling. i will check in next week
